I was driving home from my son’s hockey game in St. Eustache listening to the Habs game on 98.5 FM and it was something else listening to Martin McGuire and Dany Dubé describing the battle at the Winnipeg Jets’ net in the dying minutes of the game.
So I just saw the video and man it’s even wilder than what I thought. Jets’ goalie Al Montoya and defenseman Zach Bogosian basically gang up on wee Brendan Gallagher. Bogosian smashes him into the back of the net – with no puck anywhere near the scene – and then Montoya punches him twice in the head.
Wilder still, the two of them hold him there by the net, not letting the Habs bring the puck back into the zone, as the seconds tick toward the end of a game that the Jets were to win by one goal.
Best of all, the official is standing right there watching this and doesn’t make a call. There was better reffing in my son’s game – and at any novice hockey game for that matter. Just the usual total and utter inconsistency of NHL reffing.
But the thing I love is that the whole incident just shows how Gally gets under these guys’ skin. He drives them nuts. And he does that every night. Is there another Hab who comes to play with that kind of intensity every single night? I don’t think so. That’s why we love Gallagher – and the players on every other team hate his guts. Way to go Brendan!
