When I met Chuck Comeau and Sebastien Lefebvre from Simple Plan this week for a column in the Montreal Gazette, knowing that Comeau is a huge hockey fan, I figured I had to ask if he thought we were going to see National Hockey League action this year.

“It’s a tough question,” said Comeau, who pounds the skins for Simple Plan and is also the group’s unofficial spokesman.

“I think so. I think it’s moving in the right direction. It sucks. I can’t believe they can’t get it together.”

Adds Lefebvre, who plays guitar with the super popular Montreal pop-punk band: “What do you do in the fall, when it starts getting cold, and you can’t go to a bar and watch a game? What do you do? Like there’s nothing else to do.”

“I guess I’ll try to play as much as possible,” said Comeau. “I try to play when I’m in Montreal.”

Simple Plan memorably played at the Bell Centre for the All-Star game in January 2009 and that moment remains a highlight for them.

“For me as a hockey fan, it was definitely a really cool moment,” said Comeau. “Plus we were hanging from the ceiling (on a stage).”

“To play sports events is fun because they’re not necessarily fans and you can hopefully put a smile on their faces and maybe convert them,” said Lefebvre

A biography of the band, Simple Plan: L’Histoire offcielle, is being launched Thursday. There will be an English-language version released late this month.

Simple Plan are also hosting a benefit event for the Simple Plan Foundation on Sunday Nov. 18 at noon at the Montreal Science Centre, within the framework of the exhibit Muzik: From Sound to Emotion. All the information is on the Foundation web site.

Below is a photo of the official Simple Plan hockey stick – all proceeds from the sale of the stick go to the foundation.
